Do you have a skill that you would like to share with others? Are you the go-to person for your friends on a particular subject? Do you just want a forum to share your thoughts? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your own blog may just be what you’re looking for. I’ll take you through the step by step process on how to start a blog!
First things first. What will you blog about?
Seems like a logical first step, right? You need to know what you want to write about in order to start a blog. You can start with the questions above. Some questions I answered for myself that helped me narrow down my blog content are…
- What am I passionate about? What can you talk about nonstop?
- Do I have a skill or knowledge I can share with others?
- Do I have a product to sell?
- Who is my target audience?
Next, you need a domain name.
Your domain name is what will identify your site. It will be the first peek into your brand, so you should pick a name that reflects the content of your blog.
- What is a domain name?
- A domain name is used to locate a particular site on the internet. For example, www.cheekycelie.com is my domain name.
Once you’ve decided on your domain name, you need a place to host your site.
There are several choices of places to host your site. I chose Bluehost.com. It was super easy to sign up and they check the availability of your domain name for you.
Let’s see some screenshots, shall we?
When you launch the bluehost site, you’ll see the below page first. Click ‘get started now’.
The next screen will give you plan options. I recommend choosing the “most popular” plan. Of course, you know what’s best for you. I mean it is your blog, but I suggest choosing the “plus” plan because it is scalable and offers way more than the “basic”, but at a moderate price point. I recommend you add Site Backup Pro to your package. If anything goes wrong (it happens more often than you think), you’ll have a backup available. You can also call Bluehost for assistance.
Please note, you pay for the full year upfront. The monthly breakdown is provided for your information.
Now that you’ve selected your plan, it’s time to enter that awesome domain name you decided on earlier (or transfer your existing domain name).
Voila! You now have your very own hosted site!
